Experience Music Series
Grupo Borikuas, a Latin band that performs dynamic ethnic music from Puerto Rico with Afro-Caribbean roots, was born in 1996, five years after its founder Neftalí Rivera moved to Oregon. The band’s mission is to spread Puerto Rican music and culture throughout the Portland area with the help of their beautiful vocal harmony, virtuosic percussion and charming and friendly stage presence. Borikuas members are all of Puerto Rican descendant who authentically feel passion for their heritage, their music, and their culture. Sharing this passion as well as a true friendship, through their presentations and performances, Ramón Cancel (lead guitar, Puerto Rican cuatro, and vocals), Aquiles Montas and Martín Velez (percussion and vocals), and Neftalí Rivera (guitar and lead vocalist) give life to the Puerto Rican music. Puerto Rican singer and songwriter, Neftali Rivera, was born in a small town on the island of Puerto Rico. At an early age, he started to learn to play the guitar and sing in family gatherings. He came from a huge family of musicians and singers. In 1991 he moved to Portland, Oregon in pursuit of better opportunities for himself and his family. Their first recorded CD in the US “Borikén”, consisted of original songs written and composed by Neftalí and Geraldo Vargas. “Encanto Latino” is Neftalí’s second and first solo album, in which legendary Peruvian guitar player Jesús Cornejo is featured. This album is a compilation of the most famous Latin American songs. Neftalí’s third album Tiempo y memórias has received national and worldwide recognition. The latest one “Regalo a mi pueblo” is a compilation of Neftalí’s latest compositions selling in digital platforms worldwide.
Invited to Experience Music Series
During their first public performance at Pioneer Square in Portland, they were contracted by the Oregon Folk Department to play their music through a series of presentations in Portland Public Parks under the program “Music in the Park”. It was through this performances that Grupo Borikuas became to be known in Portland and surrounding cities. Ever since, Borikuas have been successfully performing in private events, conventions, and cultural activities such as “Celebration of National Hispanic Heritage”, “Celebrate Hillsboro”, “Latino Cultural Festival”, “Salsa en la Calle”, and “World Series Music Concerts” among others.
